Sensex falls by 709 points, NIFTY falls by 208 points at closing

Today's trading session yielded a negative return as Sensex fell by 1.26%, dragged down by the performance of metal and IT shares along with oil and energy stocks. This breaks the five day streak of positive growth that the bourses had witnessed. NIFTY also slid by 1.23% as Midcap and Smallcap stocks could not retain momentum past noon. Altogether, 1296 shares were in the green, 2014 shares were in the red and 95 shares were unchanged.  Market performance can be explained by worldwide inflationary concerns and the volatility surrounding Asian markets, as even the Hong Kong stock exchange witnessed more than expected volatility.

In the commodities market, gold fell by 1.04%, silver fell by 1.36%, natural gas fell by 1.91%, and crude oil fell by 5.24%
