Multiple suicide bombings in Nigeria have resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people
Emergency service officials reported that three women detonated explosive devices at a wedding and a funeral in a city formerly controlled by Boko Haram. Until now, no organization has taken credit.
Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has been facing various security challenges for a long time, such as widespread abductions of individuals from different age groups and social backgrounds. At a minimum of 18 individuals lost their lives and many others were wounded in multiple suicide bombings on Saturday in northeastern Nigeria, all perpetrated by females. The attacks occurred at a wedding and a funeral, as reported by local authorities.
Mr. Saidu mentioned that those impacted were kids and expectant mothers. At least 30 people were reported killed according to several Nigerian news sources.
By Sunday afternoon, the bombings had not been claimed by any group. The explosions were similar to assaults conducted by Boko Haram, a group that has caused the deaths of tens of thousands in Nigeria and forced over two million people to flee due to their violence in the area. The amount of suicide bombings has gone down in the last few years, however, the explosions on Saturday serve as a reminder that terrorism is still a significant danger in northeastern Nigeria.
In an initial report seen by The New York Times, Mr. Saidu stated that the first assailant exploded a bomb she had on at a wedding party on Saturday. Kenneth Daso, a public relations officer with the Borno police, reported that seven fatalities occurred in the explosion, which included the attacker and a baby she was carrying.
Mr. Saidu stated that later on, two more attackers carried out a strike close to a hospital and during the funeral of a victim of the initial explosion. Authorities did not provide information on the number of devices detonated, the casualties in the other bombings, or the fate of the suicide bombers involved. However, Mr. Saidu stated that in the series of attacks, at least 18 people have been killed to date.
On Sunday, contradictory information was provided by both the police and emergency services. Mr. Daso, of the Borno police force, claimed that only two explosions had occurred. However, during a phone interview, Mr. Saidu from the emergency services reported that he and his team had observed three incidents, one of which occurred near a hospital involving a female teenager detonating a device. Fatima Musa, a civil servant in Gwoza’s local government council, also stated that three explosions occurred in Gwoza.
