36 people have died in Northeast India following Cyclone Remal, prompting an orange alert for Assam and Meghalaya until June 2

During Cyclone Remal's gradual decrease in intensity, Tuesday revealed a story of disaster in four northeastern states, with heavy rains and landslides causing chaos, resulting in the deaths of at least 36 people and leaving over 10 missing. The area, covering all eight states, dealt with disrupted road and rail connections, halting regular activities.

Mizoram, facing the worst of the destruction, recorded 27 deaths, with a heartbreaking quarry collapse in Aizawl district causing 21 fatalities. Nagaland had four fatalities, Assam had three, and Meghalaya had two. The continuous heavy rain, along with strong winds, caused landslides, knocked over trees, and hindered important services such as electricity and internet connections.

Tripura also experienced extensive damage, with many homes destroyed and locals seeking shelter in relief camps. Most areas of the state experienced strong winds of 50 to 60 km per hour along with heavy rainfall within the last 24 hours. The powerful rainfall caused chaos, destroying an astonishing 470 homes and forcing 750 individuals to evacuate to 15 relief camps in various districts.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushant Chowdhury shared information on the seriousness of the situation with the media in Agartala. It was disclosed that within the last 24 hours, there was an average of 215.5 mm of rainfall in the state, with the Unakoti district receiving the highest amount of rainfall at 252.4 mm.

In reaction to the disaster, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, decisively directed the shutdown of schools in nine districts, giving top priority to the safety of students and staff during the current crisis. The outlook is bleak for the northeastern states as heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected to persist throughout the week.

An orange alert indicating readiness is still in effect for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya until May 29, and for Assam and Meghalaya until June 2, highlighting the importance of staying vigilant and prepared in the face of these difficult conditions.
