A penalty of Rs 2,000 will be imposed for the wastage of water in Delhi
The Delhi Jal Board has sent out 200 teams throughout Delhi to stop people from using piped water to wash cars, overflowing tanks, and using domestic water for construction or commercial purposes
On Wednesday (29th May), the Delhi government fined individuals Rs 2,000 for wasting water in the nation's capital. In a letter, Atishi Marlena, the Minister of Delhi, has requested the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to send out 200 teams throughout Delhi starting on Thursday to enforce regulations against washing cars with piped water, tank overflow, and using residential water for construction or business activities.
The NGT has requested a report from the Ministry of Jal Shakti on the 49 billion liters of water wasted each day because of negligence. The NGT is aiming to enforce penalties for wasting water, which currently does not have any legal provisions.
In March of this year, 22 families were fined by the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) for a total of Rs 1,10,000 for using drinking water for activities like car washing and gardening. The use of Cauvery River water for pool parties and rain dances during Holi celebrations is not allowed in the city.
In the same month, the BWSSB recommended that city residents be cautious in using drinking water due to the crisis, asking them not to use it for tasks such as washing vehicles, construction, and recreation. Recurring offenders will be subject to a Rs 500 extra fee for every breach.
With water scarcity becoming more urgent both in India and worldwide, strict regulations and heavy fines are being put in place by many countries to penalize those who waste water.
