Arvid Kejriwal's request for an extension of his temporary bail has been forwarded to the Chief Justice
Arvind Kejriwal's expectations of a prompt hearing were disappointed when a vacation bench indicated that it would simply send his request to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who will determine the timing of the hearing.
The urgent plea of Arvind Kejriwal to extend his temporary bail by a week on medical grounds was denied by the Supreme Court. The Delhi Chief Minister, who was arrested in March for his alleged involvement in a liquor policy scam, was given temporary bail this month so he could campaign for his AAP in preparation for the election for Delhi's seven Lok Sabha seats. He was let go on June 1 and instructed to come back to Tihar Jail by June 2.
Nevertheless, Mr Kejriwal's expectations for a prompt hearing were crushed when a vacation bench announced it would simply pass on his request to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who will determine the timing of the hearing.
"The CJI will take an appropriate decision on listing this plea," the bench of Justice JK Maheshwari and KV Vishwanathan said, noting the verdict in the original case - Mr Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate - had been reserved after the last hearing on May 17.
