Indian Wedding Industry, valued at Rs 10 Lakh Crore, is ranked as the second largest sector after Food and Grocery

Indian weddings have always been known for their grandeur, leading to the wedding industry becoming the second-largest sector in the country due to its lavishness. The Indian wedding market is worth around Rs 10 lakh crore, ranking as the second biggest industry following food and grocery. As per a study, the typical Indian allocates double the amount for weddings compared to education.

Annually, India witnesses around 8 million to 10 million weddings, compared to 7 to 8 million in China and 2 to 2.5 million in the US. According to a report from brokerage firm Jefferies, the Indian wedding industry is almost double the size of the US industry, but still smaller than China's industry. The report points out that weddings rank as the second most significant expense category in India. Weddings would be the second largest retail category after food and grocery, with a value of US$ 681 billion.

Expensive and elaborate Indian weddings stimulate spending in sectors like jewelry and clothing, contributing to the growth of the auto and electronics industries. Despite efforts to curb lavish weddings, extravagant destination weddings overseas continue to showcase Indian opulence.

India is the top global wedding destination with 8 to 10 million weddings held each year. The wedding sector in the country is valued at approximately US $130 billion, almost twice the size of the United States, and it greatly impacts consumer spending in different industries. Indian weddings, renowned for their multiple days of celebrations, range greatly from simple to extremely lavish, impacted by region, faith, and financial standing.

The report emphasized that in India, the amount of money spent on weddings is double the amount spent on education until graduation, while in the US, wedding expenses are lower than half of education expenses.
