Niti Aayog creates panels as India begins journey towards achieving 2070 net-zero target
Six teams were formed to explore problems, create solutions, and propose policy measures regarding different areas of climate change.
Three years later India announced its aim to be a net-zero economy by 2070, the NITI Aayog has started crafting a plan by forming specialized committees across different sectors.
In 2021, India became one of the few countries to establish a specific year to achieve a net-zero carbon economy. During COP26 in Glasgow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a five-point 'Panchamitra' climate action plan for India and pledged to reach net-zero emissions by 2070, aligning with countries such as the US, the UK, and China.
A memo from NITI Aayog in April stated that working groups have been formed to address different aspects of climate change concerning India's commitments to the UNFCCC, development needs, and the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
The document, "Setting up Interministerial Working Groups to create plans for achieving national goals on net zero emissions and suggest ways to reach them", features involvement from current and past government officials, sector regulators, financiers, sector experts, academics, and industry representatives.
