Team India celebration: 300,000 supporters, 5,000 officers, 1 T20 World Cup prize

Around 5,000 police officers were deployed by the Mumbai police at Marine Drive and Wankhede stadium as approximately 300,000 people came to witness the Indian cricket team's victory parade following their T20 World Cup win.

Another high-ranking official stated that the police were stationed at key locations, aiding in managing and overseeing the movement of the crowd at Marine Drive and Wankhede. The team's bus had a Quick Response Team (QRT) escorting it, along with additional police personnel present near the bus. Several police officers were monitoring the Marine Drive promenade for any individuals exhibiting anti-social behavior.

Although the bus parade started after 7:30 pm, supporters had already assembled at Marine Drive as early as 3 pm. Individuals traveled from various parts of the city. Office workers who left work early, students from colleges, and families all participated in the parade donning Team India jerseys. The authorities requested the police to prevent theft and unruly behavior at the location while also avoiding any chaos. A police officer from Marine Drive police station stated that it was a joyful period and they didn't want to limit individuals.

Although the police had made preparations, there were instances of stampedes along the victory parade route. In certain areas, the police had to use small baton charges due to a lack of space for movement. Around twelve kids got lost in the crowd but were eventually found and returned to their parents. Fourteen individuals were hospitalized for minor injuries or respiratory issues caused by the large crowd. All of them were released on the same Thursday.

Despite the challenges, the traffic authorities effectively controlled the flow of vehicles in south Mumbai, as per Anil Kumbhare, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic). Kumbhare stated that they had taken maximum precautions to prevent any unpleasant incidents because of the large crowd at the event. "We had implemented sufficient security measures at both the Marine Drive promenade and Wankhede Stadium."

The Mumbai traffic police blocked off all roads to Marine Drive and the Wankhede stadium for vehicles starting on Thursday afternoon. It also asked nearby businesses to allow their employees to leave early to minimize the crowd in the second half.
