World Water Day

Every year on March 22nd, World Water Day is commemorated to honour water and raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people who do not have access to safe drinking water. The day encourages people all across the world to act to address the worldwide water crisis. This year, the theme for the day is "Groundwater, making the invisible visible".Groundwater is an invisible resource that provides almost half of all drinking water worldwide, about 40% of water for irrigated agriculture and about one-third of water required for industry. Groundwater is water found underground in aquifers, which are geological formations of rocks, sands and gravels that hold substantial quantities of water. Groundwater feeds springs, rivers, lakes and wetlands, and seeps into oceans. Most arid areas of the world depend entirely on groundwater. It is also critically important to the healthy functioning of ecosystems, such as wetlands and rivers.
